PHASE 形与神
Muti-Media Event Phase is a group of works that I have worked with the Multi-Media Event class for the past nine months. This series contains full an assemblage of crochet masks and capes. Phase is not only about the garment itself, but also the performance. I was able to explore the relationship within garments, sound, choreography and performance. My work is dedicated to human communication with oneself in the form of ritual. I incorporate the basic concept of Nuo Opera, part of China's intangible cultural heritage. In Nuo Opera, villagers put on masks representing gods and act as gods. I introduce a similar concept in my work. When models wear my masks, they have the freedom to be anyone or anything. Nuo Opera is about a close communication between man and god. My work is about the communication between self and the person, to complete the exploration of their personality. Crochet, for me, is also a ritual, a practice of self-exploration. My crochet work is usually improvisational, and every step is an expression of my subconscious. I use photography as a bridge, to locate my exploration with the people who wear my work. |
